What is the Difference Between Bluetooth 5.3 and Bluetooth 5.2?

Release date:2022-8-18 0:27:12

The Bluetooth SIG has officially released the latest Bluetooth Core Specification – Version 5.3 on July 13, 2021.

Bluetooth 5.3 version improves the periodic broadcast, connection update, and channel classification in BluetoothLE. Through the improvement of these functions, the communication efficiency of Bluetooth low energy consumption is further improved, the power consumption is reduced, and the wireless coexistence of Bluetooth devices is improved. Bluetooth version 5.3 also further improves the security of classic Bluetooth (BR/EDR) by introducing new features.

Following as introductions for the main changes and new features in Bluetooth 5.3 version:

1. Bluetooth Device Role Name Changes

In order to reflect the non-discrimination and inclusiveness of the Bluetooth SIG, the Bluetooth 5.3 version has changed the role of the Bluetooth device: the Master is changed to Central, and the Slave is changed to Peripheral. Central includes but is not limited to computers, mobile phones, tablets and other devices that can initiate a Bluetooth connection; Peripheral includes but is not limited to headphones, watch rings and other devices that can accept Bluetooth connections. The Bluetooth core specification does not limit the roles supported by specific Bluetooth devices. In theory, a Bluetooth device can support both Central and Peripheral roles at the same time.

2.  Supports ADI periodic broadcast

The modification of Link Layer technical specification allows adding Adv Data info in AUX_SYNC IND, thereby activating the function of filtering periodic broadcast reports containing the same data (reported to Host by Controller). This new feature facilitates various application cases in LE Audio and Mesh. Filtering periodic broadcasts containing duplicate data will reduce unnecessary information exchange and help improve communication efficiency. ADI includes DID and SID, where DID is used to distinguish different broadcast data content, and SID is used to distinguish different broadcast groups

3. Added LE Enhanced connection update function

The time it takes to update a valid connection interval when a connection is already established has been greatly improved by the introduction of the connection subrating mode in Bluetooth Low Energy. connection subrating is a quick way to modify the valid connection interval for existing LE ACL connections. Through the connection subrating mode, the central device and the peripheral device can skip most of the connection events in the existing connection. For example, when the subrating fraction is 7, only one connection event will be used in every 7 connection event cycles, which is equivalent to effective The connection time interval has been expanded by a fraction of 7. Through the connection subrating mode, the duty cycle of the Bluetooth device can be quickly reduced to save power, and the normal connection rate can also be quickly restored to improve data throughput.

4. Added the function of Host to set Controller key length

The HCI_ Set_ _Min_ Encryption_ Key_ Size command is newly introduced, which is used by the Host to set the minimum key size acceptable to the Controller. After the Host successfully sets the minimum key length, the key length used by the Controller in the subsequent BR/EDR connection transmission shall not be less than the set minimum key length. This new feature is a further improvement of Erratum 11838, the emergency revision for Bluetooth KNOB security vulnerabilities released in 2019. The purpose is to prevent security attacks through KNOB. Successful KNOB attacks will lead to the risk of information leakage and information tampering. The current method of checking whether the key length is greater than the minimum key length (56-bit) specified in the specification requires multiple rounds of communication with the Controller, which results in a time window that does not meet the encryption requirements and makes KNOB attacks possible.

5.  Added LE channel rating function

The LE channel classification function has been added in Bluetooth 5.3 version. After Central activates the channel reporting function on Peripheral, peripheral devices can regularly report the availability of each channel to Central for use in future frequency hopping map updates. For example, when Peripheral detects that there is strong interference on a specific channel, it can mark this channel as "bad", and the channel without interference can be marked as "good", and report the complete channel identification map to Central, and Central is updating the jump. Channels identified as "bad" will not be used when viewing the frequency map. Through the LE channel classification function, the mutual interference between Bluetooth devices and other wireless devices can be reduced, and the coexistence of wireless communication can be improved.

6. High Speed (HS) profile removed from Bluetooth Core Specification

Bluetooth 5.3 version completely removes the High Speed (HS) configuration and related technical specifications introduced by Bluetooth 3.0 version. All technical specifications related to general alternative medium access control and physical layer are deleted, including IEEE 802.11 PHY and MAC layer (802.11MAC-PHY), 802.11 protocol adaptation layer (802.11 PAL), alternative MAC/PHY management protocol layer (A2MP) have been removed from the Bluetooth core specification.
